"Hey y’all! My name is Alicia Sim and I am a fourth year studying Architectural Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. This past semester I completed a co-op with a general contractor in Austin. The construction industry is a heavily male-dominated field, but luckily I had an amazing female mentor. She was very encouraging and let me explore all the different roles I was interested in within the company. For example, I got experience with estimating, saw what our field engineer and our BIM coordinator do, and got to interview a kick-a** female Project Manager! My mentor was incredibly knowledgeable about construction and taught me so many things! I learned how to use our project management software, process RFI’s and submittals, and how to check beam and grider sizes for accuracy with the drawings. I am so grateful that I had an incredible mentor to look up to. She made my co-op experience truly wonderful, and I hope everyone has a similar positive experience in the workplace as well. It is so important to have fellow females in the workplace to connect with. She helped me feel a part of the team and encouraged me to share my ideas and speak up during meetings. I felt comfortable enough to be myself and joked around with my co-workers. I hope this convention encourages more women to be themselves and become amazing role models in the future."
