Mentors Resolving Barriers in Tech

meeraruxmohan8

Hi! My name is Megan Teo, and I’m a second-year Computer Science major and Business minor here at UT Austin! When I took my first computer science class in high school, the first thing I noticed was the lack of women in the room. Every day, I questioned my belonging and doubted my capabilities solely because of my gender. Now, as an undergraduate, I’ve begun to notice the challenges women face within the workspace. Problems in the male-dominated tech industry range from an underestimation of women’s skills to mistaking drive for aggression. These daily barriers lead many women to leave the industry they have worked hard to join. It’s appalling to hear but the quit rate for women in tech-related fields is more than double that of men. I have been fortunate enough to have incredible female mentors in my field and cherish the guidance they’ve given me, both personally and professionally. I look forward to attending Re-sonate and helping to create a culture for women in tech, so they can find similar systems of support and guidance as they continue to pursue their goals and achieve great things.
